How the League Works

Join a Team ▼

Register with your club, form your own team, or sign up as a free agent to be matched

Three Ways to Join:
  • Club Teams: Your existing chess club registers as a team
  • Custom Teams: Gather 3 friends and create your own squad
  • Free Agents: Register solo and we'll match you with a team based on skill level and location

Team Size: 4 players per team. Substitutes allowed throughout the season.

Schedule Matches ▼

Coordinate with opponents each week for in-person or online play

Flexible Scheduling:
  • Weekly Rounds: Each team plays one match per week
  • Coordinate Together: Teams agree on date/time within the weekly window
  • Choose Your Format: Meet in person at a chess club or play online via Chess.com/Lichess
  • Platform Support: Our system helps teams communicate and find mutually convenient times

Play & Report ▼

Complete your match and both teams verify scores through our platform

Match Day:
  • Round Robin Format: Each player on your team plays all 4 players on the opposing team (16 total games)
  • Time Control: 5 minutes per player with 5-second increment per move
  • Scoring: 1 point for a win, 0.5 for a draw, 0 for a loss
  • Team Winner: After all 16 games, the team with the most total points wins the match
  • Score Entry: Both team captains enter results into the platform
  • Verification: Both teams must confirm scores before they're official

Season Structure:
  • Regular Season: 10-12 weeks of weekly matches
  • Live Standings: Track your team's position in real-time on the platform
  • Playoff Qualification: Top 4 teams advance to single-elimination playoffs
  • Championship Match: Final two teams compete for the inaugural LA Chess League title
